We Know the Setting!

Okay, here's a quick rant about the Wheel of Time series. To put it bluntly, we've read the books!

We're on book 11, it's long past time to stop writing as if we are new readers. Anyone that picks up #11 is going to be confused about the characters and events that were covered in previous books. Mr. Jordan, with all due respect, you do not need to keep explaining the same thing over and over and over!

That is the single most important aspect of New Spring that made it such a good read (aside from the single plot thread). Had New Spring been written like the other books, it would have been twice as long as it explained things we already knew and understood.

[Rant for another time: it's past time to stop introducing new plot points!]

I agree! I never quite understood why RJ bothered to go over the same things in every book. You're right; no one could pick up Book 5 and read it without reading the four before it, so why spell it all out like that's what people are doing?
I was actually forced to do that very thing my first time through the series. -shrug- I got through it well enough, though there were a LOT of details lacking that I found very interesting once I managed to get #4.
I found some of the repetition useful in the beginning of the series - it made the world seem more realistic that I knew so many details of it. But the last few books have been almost entirely repeated details and no plot advancement. I agree, get on with it!
